The Big Cats

Evenings in Africa appear peaceful, yet I knew it was the pause before each predator lays an ambush for the night.

A Safari in Africa is never complete without seeing the big cats in their natural environment. Travelers from all over the world come to Africa to see lion, leopard and cheetah-the most sought-after animals on safari.  East Africa is by far the best destination to see the big cats. It is here that half of Africa’s lion population is to be found. The open plains of the Masai Mara and rocky kopjes of the Serengeti make it easier to find these big cats than anywhere else in Africa.

A big cat safari with Rhythms of Nature is not only a great opportunity to see these predators but to tune in to their rhythm- a rare chance to learn about their survival and struggle in an untamed, unforgiving wilderness. Big cats are territorial meaning they hold territories for a lifetime, making it easy to track and follow them all year round. This characteristic gives our guide a private window to observe individual characters and their chronicles. The big cats are the starts of our show and it is their stories you hear on safari.

Best Time to see The Big Cats

Big cat sightings are almost a guarantee on all our safaris. It is relatively easy to find them all year round. However, certain weather and geographical conditions can limit sightings at certain times of the year. Despite this, the fact remains that it is almost impossible to miss the big cats on safari.

The great wildebeest migration (July- September) brings a season of plenty for the predators in Masai Mara. With the abundance of this unexpected food supply, the big cats are more active as they make the most out of the irresistible opportunity. On any safari day, early morning and evening is the best time to see some active cats. Always set the Rhythm of your alarm!
